RW Winfield Art Nouveau Opaline and Brass Flower Wall Sconces 1845

A beautiful and rare pair of gilt brass and opaline glass wall sconces / curtain pole holders by R.W.Winfield, these were manufactured on July 25,1845 from the Victorian Registry of Design Mark on the side. The gilt-edged opaline flower shades are in very good condition. Made in Birmingham, the body is made in the form of a plant, the total height of each sconce 31 cm.

These sconces by Winfield were exhibited both in 1849 in Birmingham and 1851 at the Great Exhibition. The Victoria & Albert Museum have a single example by Winfield in The British Galleries room. Winfield was ahead of his time, and a lamp of his was included in the 78 objects of the Henry Cole notorious exhibition ' Examples of False Principles of Decoration ' held at Marlborough House in 1852.
