Late 18th Century Carved Giltwood Double Headed Eagle Element
A finely sculpted 18th-century Continental carved giltwood architectural plaque, depicting a majestic double-headed heraldic eagle (bicephalic eagle). Characterized by its dramatic, sweeping form, this piece features masterfully rendered, deeply undercut wing feathers and prominent outspread talons that convey a striking sense of power and movement.
The face of the carving retains a beautifully aged, rich gold leaf finish over gesso, displaying a wonderful deep patina with subtle, authentic areas of wear that highlight the textured gouge-work of the master carver.
The reverse offers a fascinating insight into period craftsmanship, showcasing a completely hand-carved, adzed timber back that remains in its un-restored state. The underside reveals deep, fluid gouge marks where the craftsman hollowed and shaped the heavy single piece of wood block, alongside historic gilding remnants along the outer structural edges. Fitted with an early, hand-forged iron hanging loop centered perfectly for secure wall mounting.
Offered in excellent country house condition, commensurate with an antiquity of the 18th century. Minor historic losses, rubbing, and flaking to the original gesso and gilding, revealing the warm underlying bole and bare timber beneath, perfectly preserving its authentic character and structural integrity. Stable and ready to hang.
Height 39 cm, Width 50 cm, Depth 5 cm
