Product details

An Exceptional 19th Century Gothic Revival Wrought Iron and Brass Chandelier

An extraordinary and highly atmospheric late 19th-century continental hanging candle chandelier, beautifully showcasing the intricate metalwork of the Gothic Revival era. Designed as an openwork, egg-shaped "cage" or corona , this magnificent fixture masterfully balances the strength of hand-forged iron with the warm elegance of polished brass.

The central body of the chandelier is a masterclass in classical ironwork, featuring a series of contoured vertical bands filled with delicate, fluid filigree scrollwork. This airy, transparent cage is cinched by a wide, heavy brass belt that serves as the visual anchor of the piece. This central band is meticulously detailed with hand-embossed starburst, rosette, and geometric motifs that catch the light beautifully.

Branching out symmetrically from the central band are sweeping, S-curved iron candle arms. Each arm terminates in an exquisite, cast-brass candle bobeche shaped like an opening tulip or lotus bud, designed to cradle traditional taper candles. The fixture is perfectly balanced by decorative brass elements at its poles: a bulbous hanging loop, and an intricate, crown-form drop finial at the base. Patina to the brass, commensurate with the age of the chandelier, small amount of movement to some of the arms.

Height 63 cm, Width 46 cm
