19th Century Italian Blue Polychrome Wooden Ostrich Feather Wall Lights
An exquisite and highly decorative pair of 19th-century Italian wall candle sconces, later converted to lights, beautifully hand-carved in wood with a striking Prince of Wales Ostrich feather motif. An historic repair to one plume.
This magnificent pair masterfully balances grand neoclassical architecture with a playful elegance. Each sconce features a dynamically sculpted cluster of three majestic plumes, meticulously carved to mimic the texture of genuine feathers. The surfaces boast an exceptionally well-preserved polychrome finish, marrying a soft, chalky cerulean blue with weathered cream undertones.
The edges are picked out in water-gilded gold leaf, catching the light beautifully to highlight the deeply carved fronds. Emerging from a bound ribbon-style base are two delicately scrolled, organic metal arms. Each arm supports an elegant, scalloped bobeche finished in matching blue and gold leaf, housing a clean white candle-sleeve.
