Venetian Etched Wall Mirror Late 18th Century
An exquisite and highly rare 18th-century Venetian etched glass wall mirror (circa 1750), featuring an elegantly shaped, multi-plate cartouche silhouette. This exceptional piece epitomizes the theatricality, refinement, and unparalleled craftsmanship of Venice’s golden age of glassmaking.
The mirror is masterfully constructed from central and peripheral hand-blown glass plates, structurally defined by an antique gilded lead edge that follows the fluid, undulating curves of the late Baroque and early Rococo eras.
The central oval plate serves as a magnificent stage for intricate, hand-engraved allegorical imagery. It depicts a classical, draped theatrical curtain framing a central urn, flanked by two finely detailed heraldic griffins. The surrounding plates are beautifully balanced with delicate foliate borders, cross-hatched patterns, and traditional paisley-shaped motifs.
At the crown, a spade-shaped crest mirrors an elegant pendant drop at the base, both featuring finely etched depictions of birds in flight.
The mirror retains its original, un-restored mercury glass plates. The reflective surfaces have aged spectacularly, exhibiting a deeply desirable, authentic foxing and soft silver degradation.
Probably it was originally presented as a grand girandole.
Height 63 cm, Width 35.5 cm, Depth 2 cm
