Late 18th Century Gilt and Polychrome Painted Altar Medallion / Plaque
An exceptional and highly decorative late 18th to early 19th-century European (Continental) religious tondo plaque, meticulously hand-carved from solid timber. This striking ecclesiastical piece features the holy IHS Christogram (Monogram of Christ) set within a vibrant, hand-gilded radiating sunburst. The central motif is beautifully bookended by four beautifully hand-painted cherubim emerging from a cloud-like ether, rendered in the classic Late Baroque/Rococo tradition.
Presented in wonderful antique condition, showcasing an authentic, untouched historic patina. The gilded elements display beautiful craquelure and a soft, aged luster. The painted surfaces retain excellent color depth with minor, honest stabilization and surface wear consistent with age, historic chapel display, and exposure to incense/candle smoke over the centuries.
Replacement hanging loop to the rear.
Diameter 58.5 cm, Depth 2 cm
