An Exceptional 19th-Century French Dieppe Carved Bone Wall Mirror

This magnificent 19th-century French Dieppe Mirror is a masterclass in Baroque-revival bone work, representing the absolute pinnacle of Northern French carving tradition.

Crafted during the height of Dieppe's romantic mid-to-late 19th-century revival period, the oval bevelled mirror glass is set within an incredibly dense, multi-layered frame constructed of masterfully segmented and applied bone plaques over a structured support.

The intricately hand carved bone frame is heavily adorned with naturalistic, overlapping foliate leaf details, stylized feathers, and a deep relief layout of allegorical figures and mythical motifs:

The Cresting is a central plumed, heraldic armorial shield under an open crown, flanked by heraldic crest elements and an elegantly flowing banner inscribed "SCOTORVM".

Flanking the upper shoulders are a pair of exquisitely carved, trumpeting putti or cherubim

The apron & lower frame features Sculpted mythical sea creatures, roaring dolphins, and stylized foliate masks gracefully twist around the lower frame.

All set against a velvet covered wooden frame. Dieppe, France circa 1860. A very rare and highly desirable surviving piece.
